The Mood Altering Effects of Walnuts

Walnuts may have mood boosting elements, according to experts. Dr. Peter Pribis from the University of New Mexico conducted a study that measured the effects of walnuts on mood.

“In the past, studies on walnuts have shown beneficial effects on many health outcomes like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Our study was different because we focused on cognition, in this controlled randomized trial (CTR) we measured mood outcomes in males and females” says Peter Pribis.

Participants in the study consumed banana bread. Half of the participants consumed banana bread with walnuts and the other half without walnuts for several weeks. Following the trial period, participants completed a validated questionnaire for identifying moods, and there were amazing results.

Twenty eight percent of the young men who consumed the banana bread with walnuts in the study reported an improvement in mood versus those who ate banana bread without walnuts. Unfortunately, the same was not found with females, but additional research could show the same effects for women.

With these results, researchers looked into the nutrients of walnuts to see what may be contributing to the difference in mood for young men. Some of the nutrients that could be making the difference are:

  • Alpha-linolenic acid

  • Melatonin
